Day 2

DragonCon is a complete freak show. This will come as no surprise to most of you but I am always dumbfounded by some of the things we see every year. At the moment, there is a half-naked blonde in my living room wrapping herself in white duct tape to prepare her Leelou costume. We haven’t even left for the Marriott yet.

Last night we saw Walter Koenig (Star Trek’s Chekov), who is a little bit surly about stupid questions from fans but was pretty freakin funny so it balanced out a bit. I can’t blame the guy for being annoyed by questions like, “In episode 20 you and Spock were standing on the planet Buttcheek and Spock got shot–what was going through your mind?” But most celebs attending these things are a little more gracious and patient than he was. One girl asked him about Jewish symbolism in Science Fiction because she’s working on her master’s thesis on the topic. Oye!

We also watched Chris and Scott participate on a collaborative writing panel. While they got outtalked by the other folks at the table, everytime they did get a word in edgewise the crowd loved them. One total stranger even announced from the back of the room that she’d bought their book and loved it! We’re so pleased for them that this has been such a neat experience.

Today we’ll try to catch some of the Buffy folks and tonight is James Marster’s (Spike) performing with his band, Ghost of the Robot. We’re staying at the Sheraton to avoid late night driving so I’ll probably post more Sunday night. I got the scavenger hunt list last night so we’ll grab some camera batteries and go to town. You get two points for every picture of a person with a dragon on their shoulder and there must be about a million of them downtown. I may just stick with that category and hope to accumulate enough points that I don’t have to know the difference between an Imperial and a Trade Federation Clone or Storm Trooper or whatever the hell the costume is.

Looking forward to Geoffrey Holland’s already famous smoked pork butt for dinner this evening. I’m already anticipating how badly I’m gong to want to get out of the mod scene and into a nice, cozy home with a beer and a foot rest.

Cheers!
