Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs

Tonight is the series finale of Frasier. Last week was the series finale of Friends. I only ever bothered to watch Frasier in reruns, largely because Kelsey Grammar annoys me and always has. My family watched Cheers religiously on Thursday nights and I didn’t like him then. Spinning his character off into a sitcom made no sense to me and yet, Frasier had phenomenal success. I have no idea.
Friends I watched. For a long time. Come on, it was my demographic. And yet, I haven’t paid any attention to it for more than two seasons. I have slowly been realizing that pretty much the only television I watch lately is Reality. I’ve quit watching just about everything else on the tube. Certainly network tube.
And it’s not exactly that I think Reality television is superior to well written dramas and comedies. It’s just that I’m so bored with the formula and I no longer have the attention span required to follow Niles/Daphne, Ross/Rachel love shenanigans for a payoff 10 seasons down the road when I can find out what happened with Rob and Amber within four months. Sorry, there it is. Attention span. Boredom.
HBO has been the only network to produce a half-hour comedy or an hour-long drama that has hooked me in the last four years. People are always telling me I should be watching the West Wing or Alias but I’m just bored with everything else. I’m not sure what’s up with that and this entry has no real destination.
Editor’s Note: I asked some people to throw out potential blog topics for today because I knew it was time to update but I couldn’t think of things to write about. The above slice of boredom was based on the suggested topic of Frasier’s superiority over Friends. Other topics were: Thermal Comfort (stupid ASHTRAY) Bottled Water expiration dates and ways to make a snoring co-worker shut the hell up. I couldn’t find ways to integrate all of these topics smoothly into an entry so I picked one.
I’ll continue accepting potential blog topics by e-mail or posted comments.
