The Highs and Lows of Ohio

We spent the last week in Columbus searching for an apartment, getting to know the city and hanging out with some of my family. Rather than write the lengthy narrative of our trip I’m going to do the bullet thing.

  • Quote of the Week: “I wish I knew how to make a fruit salad.” Jennifer, while we were walking through the world’s most amazing supermarket, the Giant Eagle on Hamilton, looking for side items to have with our Memorial Day cookout.
  • Accomplishment of the Week: After two days of exhaustive apartment hunting we found the cutest, biggest, and most affordable one-bedroom apartment EVAH! And it’s not even in the hood. We will be moving into the Hibernia Apartment Complex on or about July 19.
  • Disaster of the Week: After leaving the new apartment complex we promptly got into a car wreck. We were at a dead stop at an intersection, directly behind a mini-van with a 1 Cross + 3 Nails = 4Given bumper sticker when a dude in a Ford F250 truck plowed into the back of our car, sending us into the back of the van.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Equally fortunate is that the guy was driving a work truck and his company’s insurance is accepting liability for the accident, despite the driver’s attempt to claim that we hit the van first and then he couldn’t stop in time. The driver of the van confirms our version of events by telling the insurance adjusters (ours and his) that she heard the collision and looked up into her mirror just as we were coming into the back of her car.

Tanya’s poor Saturn is now housed at the Auto Body, Glass and Collision of Mill Run service facility and we had to drive home in a rented Ford Taurus (also paid for by his insurance). So, we spent the better part of Wednesday, all of Thursday and half of Friday dealing with that bullshit.

  • Disaster of the Week 2: When we woke up the morning after the wreck, Chris discovered that his work truck had been broken into and all of his tools stolen. $1,600 worth of them to be exact. So we spent the morning with a cop and Chris went off to face the music at work. Fortunately, his company’s insurance is covering that as well.
  • Highlight of the Week: My Aunt Kathleen’s 50th birthday celebration was a blast. Everybody was there except my parents and Emily. I mean good grief. I saw so many people I haven’t seen in years.

    Things I Learned:

  • Jenny’s got the loudest biological clock I’ve ever heard and Chris held my cousin’s three-month old baby for so long that women were lining up around him waiting for their turn.
  • My cousin Alex has three gorgeous children and a lovely wife. Their son Adam looks so much like Alex that I recognized him before I saw his daddy.
  • His brother, my cousin Geoffrey has a beautiful daughter and a lovely wife and he’s an IT headhunter. Too weird.
  • My cousin Susie has fabulous hair and looks like a million bucks.
  • The Columbus Arts Festival was just as much fun as any such event I’ve been to in Atlanta and many of the vendors were familiar.
  • The Columbus Police Department frequently doesn’t respond to accidents without injuries. However they did show up quickly the morning Chris’s truck got broken into.
  • Max & Erma’s has an amazing burger with horseradish and cheddar.
  • Ducks are stupid.
  • Geico is a terrific insurance company. I never have anything but helpful, friendly conversations with their representatives.
  • Bank of America does not have much of a presence in Columbus. This bugs me.
  • At 31, almost 32 years old, my first reaction to the car accident was that I wanted to call my Dad. Fortunately for him, he was in Cancun.
  • I still get migraines after periods of high stress.
  • I’m sure there’s more but I’m at a loss at the moment.

So now we start packing and making a million phone calls about utilities and rental trucks and address changes, etc. I’ve got to repaint several walls in this apartment. Oh, and I’m working part-time for Shannon’s former employer so I’m scaling back the manual labor somewhat. I think that’s a good thing.

I’ll be back to regular blogging this week now that some things have started happening. Sorry to keep ya’ll hangin’ for so long.
