Breakin’ The Law

Breakin’ The Law

It’s a funny feeling to wake up one day and realize that 51% of the country either doesn’t think you deserve civil rights or doesn’t believe that your civil rights were important enough this year to effect their vote, because as far as I’m concerned, a vote for Bush was a vote against human rights.

I told Tanya Wednesday morning that now, not only is our marriage not legal, it is actually illegal–we’re breakin’ the law! I realize that there are semantic problems with that concept but it amuses me to look at her from time to time and just go, “breakin’ the law, breakin’ the law.”

I waited to write about the election at all until today, hoping I’d be feeling a little less dramatic about it. Christina and Christopher have both written many of the things I wanted to say about my feelings on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, I’m still a bit too disturbed to say anything useful or thought provoking and I just keep staring at the screen, wondering how to tell some of you that your vote for Bush breaks my heart. That while we continue to fight a war on foreign soil against a group of religious extremists, we have just empowered a similar group of fanatics within our own borders.

Does anyone else feel as though a jihad has been declared on democracy in America?

Yes, the Democratic party has a lot of soul searching to do but we’ve also got a lot of action to take. And like so many people I know, I too am struggling to figure out how to translate my concerns into results oriented actions. And I’m angry. And I think I’m going to stay that way for a while.
