Lists and Binges

Things I’ve learned at my new apartment:

1. Cat vomit comes off of wood floors easier than carpet.

2. Old-fashioned door knobs are of the devil.

3. Casement windows are cool.

4. Laundromats are exactly the same as they were 7 years ago.

5. Trying to keep track of garbage day for my building is a pain in the butt.

Being within walking distance of things continues to be my favorite thing about living here. Last weekend Jennifer and I walked a circuit around the neighborhood, trying to find somewhere to have breakfast. We weren’t very lucky there, but only because the options were all kind of pricey and all I really wanted was some bacon and eggs, not a Pacific Coast Specialty Omelet with mint garnish and seasoned herb potatoes.

But the walk was really nice and we both enjoyed the scenery and the exercise.

I don’t think I blogged about getting myself locked inside my own closet. That was terrifying and I can assure you it will be cold day in Hades before that door is ever allowed to close behind me again. I have it on authority from the previous tenants and their friends that similar moments of panic have also occurred with the bathroom door. I’m thinking about taking the knobs all off and trying to reinstall them tighter.

Binges

I’ve been on a television binge lately. For a few months there all I did was read and I barely watched anything. And most of you know that last season I took a complete hiatus from Reality shows entirely. But the addition of the DVR box and the start of the new television season have found me back on the couch with the remote in my hand.

Here’s what I’m watching:

Weeds: Mary Louise Parker’s best role ever. I’ve always thought she was under-utilized but watching her shine in the lead role on this series has confirmed it. Really well written, hilarious and moving all at once. Showtime may yet give HBO a run for their series money.

Survivor: Okay, so I missed the first episode on accident, but I read the review on TWOP and I’ve set the DVR to catch all the rest, so I will be watching. I’ll reserve opinions for later.

Lost: A pretty good kick-off to the sophomore season of this creepy island adventure. Getting to see what was in the hatch right off the bat was so intriguing that I didn’t care that there was almost no reference to the folks who got blown up on the raft last season.

CSI: I am probably more excited about tonight’s premier episode than is healthy. I’ll be cutting my phone off at 9.

My Name is Earl: So far this is the only new show I’ve bothered with. Mostly because Jason Lee is, well, Jason Lee. I have to say that I’ve soured on Network sitcoms for the last several years, despite occasional wins like Arrested Development. But if the premier of Earl is any indication, there may be hope for the genre yet. I laughed. A lot.

I haven’t tried any of the new supernatural dramas or the Buffy castoff series. Mostly based on the “Joey” factor. But from what I can tell, I probably really need to start watching House.

Anyway, I guess you can expect more television blogs again. At least until this current binge runs its course.

  2. Don’t forget about the OC….

Marissa’s Dad is trying to get back together with Marissa’s mom so he can get some of the money that Marissa’s mom is hoping to get from her ex-husbands death.

Seth’s mom is trying to figure out if she is ready to leave re-hab and Ryan and Marissa just got kicked out of school. I think they are going to have sex for the first time tonight which is going to cause even more problems.

  3. Doesn’t Weeds Rock?

I was worried that I’d be paying for Showtime for no good reason after QAF ended (and the L Word doesn’t start until January), but I was hooked after the first show!

I caught Kitchen Confidential after Arrested Development the other night - it was okay. The other alum show (Willow’s) has Doogie on it as well (and he was great in Harold & Kumar - oh yeah, John Cho was in at least the premiere of KC).

  4. I, too, will be glued to the TV at 9:00. I didn’t see the season finale when it was originally on, so I watched that last night.

  5. The season premier was fine but it wasn’t great. Glad Sophia isn’t in the lab anymore and actually, she was a lot more interesting as a cop. Now I almost hope she’ll remain a recurring character. Warick’s sudden wedding seemed a bit odd but not as painful as the exchanges with Catherine. Hmmm. Oh well, I’m still looking forward to the season.

  6. Also, I got out of the closet by eventually reigning in my panic and very methodically fiddling with the doorknob, including using my fingernails to tighten screws on the sides of it. Finesse got the knob to catch. But initially I was hurling myself at the door in a state of horror.

  7. Oh, god. I hate those knobs. I would NOT have kept my cool, at all.

  8. Seriously, I almost hyper-ventilated. I think I calmed down when I realized that I probably could knock the door out, at which point I had to decide if that’s really what I wanted to do or if I shouldn’t try to fix the knob first. Splintering a door in an apartment you’ve lived in for 24-hours seems somewhat crazed.

  10. I had a similar experience to yours in one of my college dorm rooms. The building wasn’t really that old - it was built in 1953 - but it had settled a bit since its construction. One night, when my suitemates weren’t home, I was in the bathroom and when I tried to leave, the doorknob wouldn’t turn! When I looked, it became obvious that I wasn’t the first person to find herself in that predicament - there were gouges in the doorframe next to the doorknob where someone had obviously tried to get out by jamming something between the doorframe and the door.

I don’t remember how I finally got out, but there were several minutes of total panic. My suitemates generally didn’t get in until at least 2 a.m.
