What??

It is nearly impossible for me to believe it has been a year.

On Thursday July 27th 2006, Mom, Dad, Emily and I, along with Chris’s parents and younger sister, stalked the maternity ward waiting for this little guy to show his face.

It was a long labor. Jen and Chris were both just fried. In the end, this child’s head was too damn big (go figure) and they delivered via c-section at 10:30 p.m.

By the time they let us back to the nursery we were all nearly crazed with relief and excitement and I remember the cell phones dialing countless friends and family members at what was pretty much an obscene hour until nurses started shushing us for being too loud.

I’m not sure I’d ever seen a more perfect thing.

He’s still pretty perfect. Quite a bit bigger of course. He walks now. And babbles like crazy. And DANCES! He has some teeth. He gives big, goofy, open mouthed kisses that are more like “I’m going to eat your face!” He has little friends and the most popular backyard on the block, complete with pool and swingset.

He knows how to mess with you and get what he wants. It’s funny how kids figure that part out so quickly. He’s a snappy dresser. When music comes on, he immediately runs to the television set because he’s looking for the video.

Tomorrow we will have a party. It’s mostly for us. There will be helium balloons, cake, presents he never knew he needed and probably a million ridiculous photos.

I think his parents deserve their own separate party–one with peace, quiet and a bit of booze. Because it’s their birthday too. The anniversary of the day they took on this incredible role. How pleased and proud they should be.
