First Snow of 2007

I didn’t actually believe we were really going to get this. Usually our weather people promise 1 to 3 inches and we end up getting a dusting. Imagine my surprise when I looked out the window this morning and the world was white.

It’s still coming down and I don’t really understand how they measure the amount of snowfall but there’s a lot of it out there. 1 to 3 inches sounds like nothing but when you look at the top of the car it sure seems like more than that. I’ll try to get some pictures but this morning I was too distracted by locating my gloves and scraping.

Mom got a couple of spooky early morning shots though.

I forgot how much I like my winter boots.

  1. Not to be a total smartass, but I would guess they measure it basically with a ruler. A traditional rain gauge is just a cylinder with inches marked on the side; I imagine a snowfall gauge would be similar.

  2. Okay sure, but where do they put the ruler? I mean, would they stick it in the top of that snow cone over there? Is there a particular, flat, level patch of grass somewhere in Columbus with a Snow Meter sticking out of it? Can anyone go there and look at it? It’s all shrouded in mystery!
