Kid Nation

There are lots of things I love about this show. The psychology of it, the simplicity of it, the social and cultural enlightenment of it. The brilliance that pops out of these children and occasionally, the absolutely terrifying evidence of their parent’s social and political value systems. That being said, what’s great about kids is that those value systems have been absorbed but not yet tested or explored. And last night provided one of the greatest examples of why personal relationships are the key to evolving perspectives in this world.

Jared and Alex (Known affectionately in our house as Chicklet) are best friends.

And I hope that stays true, but even if it doesn’t, they have influenced each other in a positive way that maybe only kids can easily accomplish. Because most kids don’t have the experience to form opinions about each other based on ideology. Kids relate to kindness, laughter, fair play, bugs and bones. And their people instincts are usually very open.

I’d have to guess that Alex and Jared’s parents would last about five minutes in a room together.

This is part of what I like about Reality Television. Maybe I should have been a cultural anthropologist or something.

  1. Huh. I also take hope in the fact that BOTH of them said the biggest problem facing us when they grow up will be global warming.
